01 / THE BRIEF
Take the light.
Get outside.
NITECORE’s summer brief was simple: take their headlamps on adventures and photograph them in use.
This collection brings together hiking and trail running. Early starts, movement on the trail and the changing light give the product a real place in the story.
02 / MOUNT PIRAN
A familiar peak.
A different light.
For the Mount Piran shoot with Maddy Elrick, we started in darkness, with thick humidity and fog below an inversion.
I had skied the peak the previous winter and knew the vantage point I wanted. Stars visible on ski hill webcams suggested the possibility of clearer skies above the cloud. We reached sunrise above Lake Louise, with the Canadian Rockies around us and the inversion below.
03 / MURRIN PARK
Keep moving.
The trail running photographs were made at Murrin Park in Squamish, British Columbia, bringing movement and a different pace to the same brief.
Wider views put the runner in the landscape. Closer frames show the headlamp in use, while traces of light carry the movement through the photograph.
04 / MOUNT SMUTWOOD
Sunset to headlamps.
On Mount Smutwood in Kananaskis, we hiked in to photograph sunset, then continued shooting with headlamps after dark before hiking out.
The red jacket and traces of headlamp light bring the movement of that evening into these photographs.
